Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
Our actions are guided by medical ethics and the principles of neutrality and impartiality.
A worldwide movement
MSF was founded in Paris, France in 1971. Its principles are described in the organisation’s founding charter. It is a non-profit, self-governed organisation.
Today, MSF is a worldwide movement of 24 associations, bound together as MSF International, based in Switzerland.
Thousands of health professionals, logistical and administrative staff – most of whom are hired locally – work on programmes in some 70 countries worldwide.
Humanitarian action
MSF’s work is based on humanitarian principles. We are committed to bringing quality medical care to people caught in crisis, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation.
MSF operates independently. We conduct our own evaluations on the ground to determine people’s needs. More than 90 per cent of our overall funding comes from millions of private sources, not governments.
MSF is neutral. We do not take sides in armed conflicts, we provide care on the basis of need, and we push for independent access to victims of conflict as required under international humanitarian law.
Bearing witness and speaking out
MSF medical teams often witness violence and neglect in the course of their work, largely in regions that receive scant international attention.
At times, MSF may speak out publicly in an effort to bring a forgotten crisis to public attention, to alert the public to abuses occurring beyond the headlines, to criticise the inadequacies of the aid system, or to challenge the diversion of humanitarian aid for political interests.
Quality medical care
MSF rejects the idea that poor people deserve third-rate medical care and strives to provide high-quality care to patients. In 1999, when MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the organisation announced the money would go towards raising awareness of and fighting against neglected diseases.
Through the Access Campaign, and in partnership with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, this work has helped lower the price of HIV/AIDS treatment and stimulated research and development for medicines to treat malaria and neglected diseases like sleeping sickness and kala azar.Responsibilities
Participating in the definition of the objectives and planning of the biomedical activities including reviewing its annual budget in order to identify and give a response to the needs of the mission and the targeted population
Monitoring and ensuring the implementation of the biomed activities in the project ensuring compliance to MSF standards, protocols and procedures, and reporting to the Project Coordinator on the development of the ongoing programmes. This includes the following:
Monitoring and ensuring the implementation of biomed equipment management procedures in the mission (installation, disposal/renewal, correct use and maintenance) and ensuring a good follow up of the different maintenance contracts
Ensuring that the preventive and curative maintenance, fault diagnosis, annual diagnosis and certification are performed for those items of equipment for which specialised training has been received
Coordinating and organising between projects for equipment/support exchange (repair returns, installation and replacement) to help ensure that as few items are out of service on the mission at any given time. This includes the packing, shipment and contact with service providers or after-sales service to the MSF Supply Centre for the repair of equipment that cannot be done locally
Organizing, planning and ensuring an appropriate stock management, including inventories of spare parts and back-up equipment. Ensuring good following and quality assessment of the company in the process of local purchase
Managing the biomed technicians and elaborating their activities planning
In collaboration with the Project Coordinator, Logistics Coordinator and the HR Coordinator, participating in the planning and implementation of HR associated processes (recruitment, training, briefing/debriefing, evaluation, detection of potential, development and communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required to correctly perform all logistics activities pertaining to his area
Providing technical support and training to staff on the use, control, preventive maintenance and basic repair of most common equipment. Managing the training of medical staff about hygiene on biomed equipment following the result of a regular assessment of medical services on these question
Participating in monthly reports according to management guidelines and following up, analyzing and reporting on the maintenance activities and on technical aspects of the work
Ensure the functionality, safety, and availability of all biomedical equipment in the hospital through preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and timely repairs in accordance with MSF biomedical protocols.
Supervise and coordinate biomedical equipment maintenance activities, including routine inspections, calibration, troubleshooting, and documentation of all medical devices.
Plan, supervise, and implement the installation of oxygen systems, including oxygen splitters in hospital wards, ensuring compliance with safety standards and continuity of oxygen supply for patient care.
Manage and follow up on all medical equipment repair requests, ensuring that faults are promptly reported, assessed, repaired, and documented, with minimal disruption to clinical services.
Organize and deliver training sessions for biomedical staff, medical personnel, and relevant hospital teams on the correct use, and safety of biomedical equipment.
Prepare, coordinate, and monitor international and local biomedical orders, including spare parts, medical devices, tools, and consumables, ensuring alignment with hospital needs, MSF standards, and budget constraints.
Maintain accurate biomedical inventory and documentation, including equipment lists, maintenance logs, repair records, and asset tracking systems.
Ensure compliance with MSF biomedical guidelines, infection prevention and control (IPC), and safety standards, including electrical safety and waste management related to biomedical activities.
Support hospital management in planning biomedical needs, including equipment replacement, upgrades, and emergency preparedness for mass casualty or outbreak situations.
Supervise and support the biomedical team, including task allocation, performance monitoring, coaching, and capacity building.
Coordinate with medical, logistics, and supply chain teams to ensure effective integration of biomedical activities into overall hospital operations.
Identify technical risks and propose mitigation measures, including equipment downtime, oxygen system failures, and power supply constraints.
Contribute to reporting and data analysis, providing regular updates on biomedical activities, equipment status, and key performance indicators to hospital and mission management.Ensure timely, accurate, and systematic reporting of all biomedical activities, including equipment breakdowns, repair status, maintenance actions, oxygen system functionality, and outstanding technical issues, to support informed decision-making and continuity of hospital services.
